2023: Upward Bound Trip – One World Trade Center and Oculus

After reflecting at the 9/11 Memorial, we crossed the plaza to take in a quick view of the inside of The Oculus. Just before entering, I captured this photo of the Oculus perfectly framed by the One World Trade Center. These two architectural marvels symbolize resilience and renewal in the heart of Lower Manhattan. One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, rises to an impressive 1,776 feet, a deliberate homage to the year of American independence. Completed in 2014, it stands as the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, offering breathtaking views from its One World Observatory and serving as a beacon of strength. Adjacent to it, the Oculus, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, is a striking transportation hub and retail space that anchors the World Trade Center complex. Its soaring, wing-like structure evokes a dove in flight, symbolizing hope and peace. Inside, the bright, open space features sleek white interiors and a bustling concourse for commuters and shoppers. Together, One World Trade Center and the Oculus embody the enduring spirit of New York City and its remarkable ability to rebuild with beauty and purpose.
For this spread, I continued the blue theme from the previous two spreads, tying it to the overall experience. On the left-hand page, I designed a graphic in Cricut Design Space that features one of the Oculus’s wings with One World Trade Center behind it. The One World Trade Center logo, which I sourced online, was also uploaded into Cricut Design Space to create the title on the right-hand page. To ensure the logo stood out, I used the outline feature to create a dark blue backdrop. All of these elements were cut using my Cricut Maker. To complete the layout, I added a torn-edge border to both sides of the spread, enhancing its visual interest. The matting paper features lined patterns that reminded me of the old World Trade Center buildings, adding a subtle but meaningful touch to the design.
