2022: Pouring the New Cement Back Porch

When we bought our home in Oklahoma, I knew that we would need to replace the back porch – it was a wooden deck structure and had been built right on top of the ground without the proper treatment and the boards were rotting pretty quickly. I extended the life of the porch deck by making repairs but realized in early summer 2022 that the deck was beyond repair. So, we decided to replace it with a cement porch that would be a lot more durable, and it turns out it cost about the same as building a new wooden deck. This spread shows the pouring of the cement, and I thought it would be fun to create this spread to add to the collection of spreads that I made about the improvements that we have made to the property.
I used Cricut Design Space to design the matting used on both pages, and was pretty proud of the construction stencil lettering that allowed me to make the title block for this spread without having to carefully place a whole bunch of letters. To add dimension to the graphics I did a double outline of orange and black on the yellow and orange pieces, and a single black outline on the grey pieces. To simplify the project, I coordinated the colors of the elements using “Color Sync”, which also helps the page be more cohesive. I used the Offset feature to create the black border which also serves as the matting for the photos. If you are a Cricut Design Space user this design can be found at https://design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/64a498c43617515506dcb07c
I selected a green background for the spread to play off the color of the grass, and then created a series of torn edge pieces to create movement on the page. Green and orange also complement each other. The striped pieces are from an earlier project and if you want to know the secret about that you can view the creation of this scrapbook spread on our YouTube channel below:
