2023: Upward Bound Trip – Wicked

During our night in New York, we had the incredible privilege of seeing Wicked on stage. With the recent release of the movie adaptation, it feels like Wicked is everywhere, but seeing it live in its original Broadway form was an unforgettable experience. If you ever have the opportunity, I highly recommend catching it on stage—it truly lives up to its acclaim.
Wicked, the celebrated Broadway musical, is a spellbinding retelling of the classic Wizard of Oz story, offering a fresh and captivating perspective on the beloved tale. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, the musical delves into the untold story of the witches of Oz, focusing on the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, the misunderstood green-skinned girl destined to become the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the bubbly and beloved Good Witch. Featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, with iconic songs like “Defying Gravity” and “For Good,” Wicked explores themes of friendship, identity, and the blurred lines between good and evil. Its dazzling costumes, elaborate sets, and emotionally charged performances captivate audiences, making it one of Broadway’s most enduring and beloved productions. Since its debut in 2003, Wicked has continued to enchant theatergoers worldwide, solidifying its place as a modern classic.
Of course, photography wasn’t allowed during the performance, so I only managed to capture one good photo of the stage before the show began. Knowing I had just this single image and the Playbill to work with, I decided to create a bold and fun layout to showcase this memorable experience. I found an image online, uploaded it to Cricut Design Space, and simplified it into the graphic you see here. I cut the design in mirror image on my Cricut Maker, layering green cardstock over a black background for a dramatic effect. To ensure the cut aligned perfectly, I carefully positioned two 12×12 green sheets on a 12×24 mat, double-checking placement before cutting. You can see the unique process I used to make sure all the elements aligned when attaching them to the background cardstock in the video linked at the bottom of this page.
The Playbill is attached to the outside of the plastic page protector. To make it more manageable, I removed nearly 80% of the advertising pages, leaving only the essential program pages. This simple adjustment made the Playbill thinner and easier to incorporate into the spread, adding a polished and organized touch to the layout.
Although this design is simple, it possesses a bold and striking quality that immediately captures the viewer’s attention.
