2023: Upward Bound Trip - 9/11 Memorial Reflecting Pools

This is the second spread dedicated to the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, highlighting the public and outdoor elements that are free for all to experience.

The 9/11 Memorial is a profoundly moving tribute, centered around two massive reflecting pools set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers. These pools feature cascading waterfalls and are surrounded by bronze plaques inscribed with the names of the nearly 3,000 victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Nearby, the Survivor Tree, a Callery pear tree that miraculously endured the devastation of 9/11, stands as a symbol of resilience and hope. Another striking feature is The Sphere, a round bronze sculpture that once stood in the plaza between the Twin Towers. Although damaged in the attacks, it was recovered and now serves as a powerful reminder of endurance and continuity. Together, these elements create a space for reflection, remembrance, and inspiration, honoring the lives lost while embodying the strength and resilience of those who endured.

For this spread, I continued the blue color theme to reflect the hues in the 9/11 Memorial logo. The layout features images of the items mentioned above: the Survivor Tree, one of the memorial plaques, The Sphere, and the reflecting pool. Out of the almost 50 photos I took in this space, I carefully selected these to best capture the atmosphere and significance of the Memorial. One particularly poignant photo shows four sailors gazing into one of the pools which I found to be a powerful moment of reflection. I honored their presence with a white sailor graphic in the top-right corner of the spread.

The left-hand side is bordered by a tree image, which I created and then cut in half to frame the spread. The Freedom Tower graphic, sourced from Cricut Access, adds a striking visual element. Although I made a mistake while cutting it out—using the same color paper as the matting for the back layer—I used a Sharpie to outline the edges, which ultimately added definition to the design. Despite this minor mishap, I am pleased with how the spread turned out, as it captures the solemn beauty and enduring spirit of this sacred space.
