2023: Wizard of Oz – Ada Chamber Banquet

2023: Wizard of Oz - Ada Chamber Banquet

In June 2023, the Ada OK Chamber of Commerce held their annual banquet, and this year’s theme had us all “off to see the wizard.” As a board member at the time, I was volun-told to join the fun as one of the characters, and I proudly took on the role of the Scarecrow. This scrapbook spread captures the whimsical magic of the event with a nod to the Land of Oz.

Left-Hand Page: Twisters, Selfies, and Golden Bricks

Starting on the left-hand page, the first thing you’ll notice is the incredible balloon tornado at the event entrance. Complete with twinkling lights, it set the perfect tone for an Oz-themed evening. Next, moving clockwise, there’s a photo from the selfie station—a brilliant idea from the organizers. The printed selfies doubled as keepsakes, complete with the event name and date, making it an effortless title block for my spread. Below that, you’ll see me standing on the hand-crafted golden brick road, a labor of love that added so much charm to the night.

Right-Hand Page: Sweet Treats from Oz

The right-hand page highlights the dessert table, which was straight out of Oz! At the top, candied apples designed to look like characters from The Wizard of Oz stole the show. Below, a stunning Ruby Slipper cake caught everyone’s attention, surrounded by other Oz-inspired desserts that made the evening feel truly magical. These photos perfectly captured the enchanting atmosphere of the banquet.

Design Details: A Scrapbook Spread Worthy of Oz

This spread was a joy to create and took about two and a half hours to complete. I designed the entire layout in Cricut Design Space, starting with a tornado image from Cricut Access for the left-hand page. The centerpiece image of the Emerald City and yellow brick road was sourced online and layered in Cricut Design Space for a dimensional effect. The Scarecrow embellishment came from Etsy (LINK to SVG).

The green patterned background paper was a deliberate choice—it reminded me of Dorothy’s iconic gingham dress, though I opted for green to echo the Emerald City theme. To frame the spread, I added torn-edge borders on both sides, which gave the layout a rustic charm reminiscent of the Scarecrow’s character.

The brown matting was cut on a 12×24 mat and the project was assembled on top of it. Once the design was complete, I then split the spread into two pages using a paper cutter. I love how the layers, colors, and Oz-inspired details came together to capture the spirit of the event.

This project was so much fun to put together, and if you’d like to see the process, there’s a 20-minute video below showing how it all came together. Whether you’re crafting your own yellow brick road or simply following along, I hope this inspires your next creative adventure. After all, there’s no place like (scrapbooking) home!

  1. Fantastic work! I just found your work and your site via Melody’s page on Facebook. As a former teacher – and a scrapbooker trying to get back into it, I just want to thank you and compliment your detail in your videos, descriptions, and sources for your elevated work . My mind is a little bit blown that you developed this whole layout, and then did a whole graphic background mat.
