2023: Washington D.C. - MLK, Jr. Memorial

Our final stop on our Washington, D.C., memorial tour was the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, a breathtaking tribute to one of history’s most influential leaders. Standing along the Tidal Basin, this powerful monument honors Dr. King’s enduring legacy of justice, equality, and perseverance. The focal point of the memorial is a striking 30-foot sculpture of Dr. King, emerging from the Stone of Hope, symbolizing his determination to break through barriers of injustice. Inspired by his famous I Have a Dream speech, the design reflects themes of struggle and progress, with two massive stones—known as the Mountain of Despair—framing the central figure. Surrounding the memorial, engraved excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches serve as reminders of his powerful words and vision for a more just world. The peaceful setting, framed by cherry blossom trees, creates a space for deep reflection, making this stop one of the most moving moments of our trip.

To capture the essence of this inspiring site, I created a scrapbook spread that is simple yet striking, designed to evoke reflection and reverence. Using Cricut Design Space, I carefully planned the layout and cut the elements with my Cricut Maker. The centerpiece of my design is a silhouette of Dr. King, which I found online and imported into Cricut Design Space for precise cutting. I also included one of his famous quotes, which is engraved on the memorial itself but was difficult to capture clearly in my photos. To guide the viewer’s eye through the spread, I arranged three photos in a gradual progression from left to right, symbolizing the approach toward the monument and its powerful presence.

For the background, I selected cherry blossom-themed paper, reflecting the natural beauty of the trees that surround the memorial. This subtle touch not only ties the scrapbook page to the physical setting but also enhances the overall aesthetic with a soft yet meaningful backdrop. My goal was to keep the design clean and impactful, allowing the imagery and message to take center stage.

This spread has quickly become one of my favorites—it’s simple, yet the combination of photography, thoughtful design, and meaningful symbolism makes it a deeply reflective piece. If you ever have the chance to visit the MLK Jr. Memorial, I highly recommend taking a moment to stand in its presence, read the engraved words, and reflect on the impact of his legacy.
