2023: Scrapbooking a “Mirror Birthday”: Celebrating 25 and 52 Together
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you probably know that my son and I share the same birthday—a tradition that has always made our celebrations extra special. However, now that he lives in Florida and I’m in Texas, we don’t always get to celebrate in person. While it’s bittersweet to be apart, we always make sure to spend quality time on the phone together, reminiscing and catching up.
This scrapbook spread captures our 2023 birthday celebration, which was especially meaningful because it marked our “mirror birthday”—my son turning 25 and me turning 52. A milestone worth documenting!
Design Inspiration
The design for this spread was inspired by the color of the balloons my son had for his celebration, which you can see on the right-hand page. I carried that color scheme throughout the layout, creating a cohesive look that connects our two celebrations even though they happened hundreds of miles apart. I designed the entire spread in Cricut Design Space and cut out the elements using my Cricut Maker, allowing for clean, precise details.
The Left Page: My Celebration
My birthday celebration is featured on the left-hand side, where my parents and I indulged in two massive sushi boats. In hindsight, it may have been too much sushi, but we all love it, so it was a delicious and memorable feast. To tie in the theme, I added chopsticks and a sushi cutout, bringing a fun, playful touch to my side of the layout.
The Right Page: My Son’s Celebration
The right-hand side focuses on my son’s birthday, showcasing the number 25 balloons that inspired the color scheme. This connection between the two pages reinforces the idea that, even though we were celebrating separately, we were still sharing the day in spirit.
Final Touches
To enhance the design, I used leftover cardstock from the balloon cutouts to create a torn-edge border, which helps the balloons stand out against the background. The torn edge adds just the right amount of texture and contrast, making the layout feel more dynamic and visually interesting.
Even though we weren’t physically together for this milestone birthday, this spread perfectly captures the joy, love, and connection we continue to share. Scrapbooking is a powerful way to bridge the distance, preserving these special moments in a way that makes them feel a little closer.
