2023: ECU Homecoming
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know that I’ve spent over 30 years in higher education, and one of the most joyful and nostalgic experiences in that journey has been celebrating homecoming at different institutions. This scrapbook spread is a tribute to my final homecoming at East Central University (ECU) in Ada, OK.
Since ECU’s mascot is the tiger and their colors are orange and black, I let those elements drive the design of this layout. The bold, spirited colors bring the energy and excitement of homecoming to life on the page.
Design Elements & Layout
I created the photo matting in Cricut Design Space and cut it out using my Cricut Maker, ensuring clean, precise cuts that enhanced the visual flow of the spread.
On the left-hand page, I incorporated a pre-purchased title block with the phrase “I ♥ My Tigers”—a perfect sentiment to express my connection to the ECU community. To add a subtle but creative touch, I cut out a tiger paw print from the matting, allowing the background paper to show through for added depth and dimension.
The right-hand page required some careful trimming to fit all the photos, but the end result captures the diverse and lively spirit of homecoming.
The Photos & Memories Captured
- On the left-hand page, you’ll find a photo of me dressed in a Western theme for the football game, a fun homecoming tradition.
- There’s also an image of the Chickasaw Nation Princess, who was part of the festivities, and the Residence Life team—a group that played a big role in making the event special.
- Moving to the right-hand page, the energy continues with pictures of:
- Roary the Tiger, ECU’s beloved mascot 🐯
- The Residence Life decorated institutional bus
- The ECU marching band, setting the rhythm for the celebration 🎶
- The cheerleaders, bringing school spirit to life 📣
- A fraternity group, showing their ECU pride
Final Touches
To balance the strong orange and black color scheme, I added a wide torn-edge border, which helps soften the intensity of the colors while keeping the layout visually dynamic. This simple but effective technique adds texture and contrast, making the page feel cohesive and polished.
