2024: Onboarding Week at New Job in Waco, TX

Although I officially began my role at McLennan Community College in April 2024, I was invited to come early in March for a week of onboarding—and I’m so glad I did. This was the first institution I’ve worked at that provided such a thoughtful and structured welcome, and it gave me a meaningful introduction to both the college and the wider Waco community. It’s hard to believe that was already a year ago.
I genuinely love working at MCC, so here comes a shameless plug: McLennan Community College (MCC), located in Waco, Texas, is a vibrant two-year institution focused on student success, academic excellence, and community engagement. Nestled along the Brazos River, MCC offers a wide range of associate degrees, workforce certificates, and transfer pathways. With a supportive environment, innovative programs, and strong partnerships with local universities and employers, MCC is a place where students can truly thrive.
On the right-hand scrapbook page, you’ll find photos from our Fire Academy, along with a shot of my office building and a view of my window on the second floor. The standout feature is a custom graphic of our Highlander mascot – Mac. I downloaded a photo of him, had ChatGPT turn it into a cartoon version, then uploaded it into Cricut Design Space, which layered the design into three colors and I cut it out using my Cricut machine – and I have to say, I’m thrilled with how it turned out. I chose red-orange hues for the layout to reflect MCC’s bold colors and Highlander pride.
During my time in Waco, I also had a little free time to explore, so I visited the stunning Cameron Park. I walked to the Emmons Cliffs, which overlook the river and offer sweeping views of the less-developed side of Waco. This area, likely part of a floodplain, remains untouched, which adds to its natural beauty. The large “W” you see on the right layout is the logo of the city of Waco. Cameron Park is truly a gem—one of the largest municipal parks in Texas, with over 400 acres of scenic trails, rugged cliffs, and riverfront views, as you can see from the photos on the page.
