2024: Homestead Heritage – Waco, TX

Just a short drive from Waco, Texas, you’ll find Homestead Heritage — a unique agrarian community dedicated to preserving traditional skills and crafts. From blacksmithing and woodworking to quilting, cheese-making, and milling, it’s a place where time seems to slow down and the old ways of working with your hands are honored and kept alive for future generations.
I had heard wonderful things about the Café Homestead, so one Saturday my dad and I decided to see for ourselves. We arrived before the restaurant opened, which gave us the perfect excuse to wander. We explored several of the craft workshops, stepped inside the historic mill that now serves as a cozy coffee shop, and peeked into the cheese cave where artisans produce cheese the old-fashioned way.
This scrapbook spread captures moments from that day. To evoke the warmth of vintage times, I chose a brown cardstock base layered with three subtle, old-style designs — you can spot the delicate patterns if you zoom in on the photos. The entire layout was created in Cricut Design Space and brought to life with my Cricut Maker.
On the left-hand page, I experimented for the first time with a side pocket to hold the Homestead Heritage brochure — you can see how it works in the accompanying video. The photos here include a sign from one of the craft houses and the mill itself. The right-hand page features images from the cheese cave and a shot of my dad savoring his meal at the café. I finished the design with double torn-edge borders on each side, adding just the right touch of rustic charm to match the spirit of the day.
