2024: Hotel 1928 – Waco, TX
I currently work at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, and recently had the chance to spend a half-day retreat with one of my colleagues. We decided to hold our meeting at Hotel 1928, a place I’ve been wanting to visit for quite a while.
Hotel 1928 is a beautiful boutique hotel created by Chip and Joanna Gaines, the husband-and-wife team best known from HGTV’s Fixer Upper and the founders of the Magnolia brand. The hotel, which opened in late 2023, was once the historic Grand Karem Shrine building. The Gaineses completely restored and reimagined it into a 33-room destination that blends timeless architecture with their signature warm, inviting Magnolia aesthetic. It now includes two restaurants, a rooftop terrace, a cozy library, and of course, the Magnolia Press coffee shop and retail space—all designed with thoughtful details that make every corner feel special.
During our retreat, we enjoyed the atmosphere so much that I couldn’t help snapping a few photos. Later, as I looked through them, I realized this experience deserved a scrapbook spread of its own.
The entire color scheme for this spread is inspired by the dark green logo used for Hotel 1928. It’s featured on the bag and sticker from the gift shop, and that deep green tone really sets the mood for the design.
On the left-hand page, I included a few meaningful mementos:
- The paper bag from the gift store
- A napkin from the restaurant
- A piece of promotional material for their Christmas season that looks like a vintage postcard
The right-hand page showcases several of the photos I took around the hotel. I cropped many of them to make sure I could fit them all while keeping the overall design balanced. At the bottom of the page, I added the Hotel 1928 sticker from the gift shop, which serves as a clean title block for the layout.
For the background, I used various shades of green cardstock, layering them to echo the elegance of the hotel’s interior. I also incorporated a torn-edge border that originally came from a family heritage scrapbook kit, but the texture and color worked perfectly for this page.
This spread combines modern Magnolia style with a touch of vintage charm—much like the hotel itself.
