2023: Upward Bound Trip - Boston Tea Party

Another highlight of our Boston visit was the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, an interactive experience that brings history to life. This unique attraction recreates the events of December 16, 1773, when American colonists protested British taxation by boarding ships in Boston Harbor and dumping tea into the water. Visitors can participate by throwing replica tea crates overboard, exploring authentically restored ships, and engaging with live actors who portray historical figures. The museum also houses artifacts from the period, including one of the original tea chests. It’s an immersive way to step into the Revolutionary spirit and better understand the tensions that led to America’s independence. This site is not on the Freedom Trail but is a must-see for anyone interested in the Boston Tea Party and its pivotal role in shaping history.

I chose the blue and white striped background paper from a Cape Cod paper pack to reflect the maritime theme of this spread. The entire layout was designed in Cricut Design Space and brought to life using my Cricut Maker. Both images featured in this spread were sourced from Cricut Access. I opted to draw the ship rather than cut it due to its intricate details, which would have been challenging to cut cleanly and difficult to see clearly once completed.

The left-hand page includes a brochure about the experience, while the right-hand page features a card I received during the event that details the character I was portraying. The card has content on both sides, so I wanted it to be easily flipped for viewing. To achieve this, I punched a hole in the card and used a leather cord threaded through a corresponding hole in the cardstock, securing it to the back with tape. To provide additional stability, I added a star brad through the same hole, ensuring the card stays in place but remains functional.

To complete the design, I used my sewing machine to stitch the border patterns visible on both edges of the spread. This added a polished, cohesive look that ties the maritime theme together beautifully.
