2023: Upward Bound Trip – Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal

2023: Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal

After viewing “Empty Sky” we headed over to the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, which serves as a Ferry Terminal to get to Ellis Island and the State of Liberty.

The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, is a historic landmark that played a pivotal role in the transportation history of the United States. Opened in 1889, the terminal was a major hub for immigrants arriving at nearby Ellis Island, serving as their gateway to new lives across the country. Featuring stunning Romanesque Revival architecture, the terminal’s grand brick facade and iconic clock tower make it a striking presence along the waterfront. Once bustling with passengers boarding trains for destinations across the Northeast and beyond, the terminal is now preserved as part of Liberty State Park. Visitors can explore its history through interpretive exhibits and enjoy its proximity to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry service. The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal stands as a testament to the vital role of transportation in shaping America’s history and remains a treasured piece of the region’s heritage.

I have always been fascinated by trains, so when I saw the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, I knew it deserved its own scrapbook spread. Although much of the building is now abandoned, its architecture and historical significance make it an incredibly striking subject. For the theme of this spread, I chose a brown and green color palette, inspired by the building’s brickwork and the green paint on its iron features.

The design was created in Cricut Design Space, using both the pen and cut features of my Cricut Maker to bring it to life. One of my favorite elements is the pen-drawn clock face on the right-hand side, which mirrors the iconic clock face on the building’s facade, visible in the photo on the left-hand side. I also incorporated an outline of the New York Harbor skyline and a ferry boat, sourced from Cricut Access, to enhance the thematic connection to the terminal’s location. To frame the spread and provide a sense of structure, I added torn-edge border pieces on either side, giving the layout a finished and cohesive look.
