2023: Upward Bound Trip – New York Public Library and Winnie the Pooh

Our tour guide apparently had a deep love for public libraries because he insisted we make a quick stop at the New York Public Library. This majestic landmark, located at Bryant Park in Manhattan, is both an architectural marvel and a treasure trove of knowledge. Known for its iconic stone lions, Patience and Fortitude, standing guard at the grand entrance, the library boasts stunning interiors, including the magnificent Rose Main Reading Room with its ornate ceilings and chandeliers. Beyond its literary offerings, the library houses unique treasures, such as the original Winnie-the-Pooh toys. These beloved stuffed animals—Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, and Kanga—were gifted to the library in 1987 and are displayed in the Children’s Center, delighting visitors of all ages. With its rich history, cultural significance, and rare collections, the New York Public Library is a must-visit destination for both book lovers and those seeking a connection to cherished childhood memories.
I designed the theme of this spread around the Winnie-the-Pooh toys. Using Cricut Access, I found images of Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, and books, and then designed the graphic in Cricut Design Space. My Cricut Maker was instrumental in cutting out the characters and writing the title block. This project took quite a bit of time, especially assembling Piglet’s intricate striped clothing, but I’m thrilled with how it turned out. I chose the background paper from a baby boy cardstock pack, and I feel it adds a playful touch that perfectly complements the theme. Although dedicating an entire page to this graphic felt a bit unconventional, it makes the spread far more engaging than a standard “library” layout.
The right-hand page features four photos from the visit—two from the exterior and two from the interior. The bottom-left photo showcases the Winnie-the-Pooh toys. Although they were displayed under dim lighting, likely to preserve them, you can still clearly see Winnie-the-Pooh, Tigger, and Kanga. Eeyore is a bit harder to make out in the shot. The graphic in the center of the spread is cut from the library gift shop bag, using a Creative Memories circle cutter, adding another meaningful layer to the design. Overall, this spread captures the charm and magic of the New York Public Library experience.
