2023: Disney Trip – Epcot World Showcase – Japan
The next stop on our journey around the EPCOT World Showcase was the Japan Pavilion—a peaceful yet powerful homage to Japan’s cultural elegance and natural beauty. Passing through the towering red torii gate, guests are transported into a tranquil world of manicured gardens, koi-filled ponds, stone lanterns, and architecture reminiscent of feudal-era castles. The rhythmic echo of taiko drums from Matsuriza fills the air, while shops like the sprawling Mitsukoshi Department Store invite you to browse everything from delicate kokeshi dolls to Studio Ghibli treasures.
For this layout, I leaned into that fusion of tradition and technology. I designed the entire spread in Cricut Design Space and brought it to life with my Cricut Maker. The background paper and the “Japan” title block came from Scrapyourtrip.com, but everything else was handcrafted with precision—just like a bonsai tree.
On the left-hand page, I used a professional photo with Snow White to thoughtfully replace someone no longer part of our story. I added an image of Baymax from Big Hero 6 placed in front of a Japanese-style gate—a nod to the film’s setting of San Fransokyo, a futuristic blend of Tokyo’s neon energy and San Francisco’s rolling hills. Though not truly Japan, Hiro and Baymax carry a distinctly Japanese spirit, and their presence fit perfectly here.
The right-hand page features two nighttime photos from our photo package, showing fireworks framed by the silhouettes of the Japan pavilion. I added a layered cut of a three-tiered pagoda, inspired by the one nestled in the Japan Pavilion’s courtyard, and anchored the page with a 3D foam Mickey sticker—strategically placed to block someone we didn’t want to highlight. As a final touch, I carefully deconstructed a paper drink umbrella from the pavilion and added it to the layout, a tiny but textured reminder of that special evening under the lantern-lit sky.
