2024: Thanksgiving Break - Dr Pepper Museum - Waco, TX

After soaking in the Magnolia Silos, we made the short walk a couple of blocks over to the crown jewel of Waco nostalgia, the Dr Pepper Museum. If you are anywhere near Waco, this one is a must. It is history, marketing genius, soda shop charm, and pure Americana all wrapped into one fizzy experience.

For this spread, I leaned hard into the classic Dr Pepper color palette. Deep maroon cardstock anchors the pages, with touches of yellow as the edging layered in to echo the vintage logo. There is something about designing with a strong brand color scheme that just works. It immediately grounds the layout and gives it that cohesive, intentional feel.

You will notice right away that this page is heavy on ephemera. I love ephemera. Tickets, labels, wristbands, table numbers. If I can peel it off, tuck it in my pocket, or politely ask to keep it, it is probably going on the page.

On the left hand side, I included photos of my son outside the museum and standing on top of the old cistern where they once sourced water. There is something meaningful about standing on history like that. I also incorporated buttons from the museum gift shop. Not just stuck on the page. I actually took them apart so I could use the printed paper centers. I mounted those with dimensional double sided adhesive so they pop slightly off the page. That small lift gives the layout texture and keeps it from feeling flat.

The right hand page captures one of my favorite parts of the visit. The soda tasting and quiz show. My son and I ended up winning. That may or may not have something to do with the fact that I have been there several times and already knew all of the answers. I am calling it teamwork.

I added our soda bottle labels from the make your own soda flavor experience. We were assigned the table sign that read 2 Grateful, and yes, I absolutely brought that home and tucked it inside the soda jerk hat on the page. It was too good not to include. You can also see our museum wristbands worked into the design. Those little details tell the full story of the day.

This spread is bold, layered, and just a little bit playful. Much like the museum itself. And every time I look at it, I can almost taste the fizz again.
