2023: Upward Bound Trip – Granary Burial Ground & Old State House

One of our stops during the guided Freedom Trail Tour was the Granary Burying Ground. The Granary Burying Ground in Boston is one of the city’s oldest and most historically significant cemeteries, dating back to 1660. Located along the Freedom Trail, this sacred site serves as the final resting place for many prominent figures from the American Revolution, including Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and the victims of the Boston Massacre.
The burial ground, named after a grain storage building once nearby, provides a serene and contemplative escape nestled amid the bustling city. Its weathered gravestones and monuments offer a fascinating glimpse into Boston’s colonial past and the sacrifices made by its patriots.
We also visited the Old State House, a historic gem and one of the oldest public buildings in the United States, dating back to 1713. Situated at the heart of Boston along the Freedom Trail, this iconic structure once served as the seat of colonial government and bore witness to pivotal moments in American history. It was from the balcony of the Old State House that the Declaration of Independence was first read to the citizens of Boston in 1776. The building also stands near the site of the Boston Massacre, a critical event that galvanized colonial resistance against British rule. Today, the Old State House functions as a museum, inviting visitors to explore its exhibits and connect with Boston’s revolutionary past. Its red brick facade and timeless charm make it a must-see landmark for history enthusiasts and anyone seeking to experience the spirit of America’s fight for freedom.
For this spread, I chose red and brown themes to match the colors of the Old State House. The images of Paul Revere and the Old State House were sourced online, imported into Cricut Design Space, and drawn with a pen using my Cricut Maker. To tie this spread to the Freedom Trail, I included a double row of bricks along the left-hand border, symbolizing that these two locations are part of this historic pathway, and tying them to the other Freedom Trail spreads in this album.
