2023: Upward Bound Trip – Old North Church and Paul Revere Statue
Continuing in the Paul Revere story we next visited the courtyard of The Old North Church and the Paul Revere Statue are two of Boston’s most iconic landmarks, steeped in Revolutionary War history. The Old North Church, built in 1723, is the city’s oldest surviving church building and famously known as the site of the “one if by land, two if by sea” signal during Paul Revere’s midnight ride in 1775. The lanterns hung from the church’s steeple warned patriots of the British approach, playing a pivotal role in the fight for independence. Just a short walk from the church, the Paul Revere Statue stands in a cobblestone plaza, depicting the legendary patriot on horseback, frozen in time during his historic ride. Together, these sites evoke the spirit of resistance and courage that defined the American Revolution, making them must-see destinations along Boston’s Freedom Trail.
I chose a brown and green theme for this spread to reflect the colors of the bricks and the lush green trees in the courtyard. I found the Paul Revere statue silhouette online and downloaded it into Cricut Design Space, along with an image of the Old North Church. The entire design was created in Cricut Design Space and then cut out using my Cricut Maker. I added a subtle beam of light emanating from the church tower, which can be faintly seen behind the photos on the right-hand side, and references the two lanterns that warned the revolutionaries that the British were coming.
To ensure the layout flowed seamlessly, I cropped one of the photos on the right page so it would fit nicely while still showcasing the full church graphic. On the left-hand side, I incorporated a double torn-edge border for texture and included a double line of bricks to signify that this stop is part of the Freedom Trail.
This was a delightful place to pause and enjoy a moment of rest in the cool, quiet courtyard, which offers plenty of seating and a serene atmosphere. The combination of design elements and thematic colors captures the beauty and history of this special location.
