2023: Upward Bound Trip – 9/11 Memorial and Museum

One of the most meaningful items on our trip itinerary was visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, a place I had long desired to see. The events of September 11, 2001, are forever etched into my memory, and visiting this memorial has been on my bucket list ever since it first opened.

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum, located at the World Trade Center site in New York City, serves as a deeply moving tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the six lives lost in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The Memorial features two reflecting pools set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers, each surrounded by bronze panels inscribed with the names of the victims, providing a solemn and serene space for remembrance. Adjacent to the Memorial, the Museum delves into the events of 9/11 through powerful exhibits, including artifacts such as the “Survivor Stairs,” the Last Column, and a fire truck damaged during the rescue efforts. Personal stories, multimedia displays, and recorded testimonies convey the profound human impact of the tragedy, ensuring the legacy of those lost and the resilience of survivors are preserved. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum stands as a place of reflection, education, and hope, honoring the past while inspiring a commitment to peace and unity.

This is the first of two spreads dedicated to this space of reflection and remembrance. I selected a color scheme inspired by the number 11 in the Memorial and Museum’s logo. The right-hand page is unique in that it features only six photographs from inside the museum. This minimalist design was intentional, encouraging viewers to focus on the devastation caused by this horrific terrorist attack.

The left-hand page contains a photo of the museum’s exterior, which I found particularly beautiful, accompanied by two pieces of ephemera. In the top-right corner of the page is the museum map, attached to the outside of the plastic page protector so viewers can open and explore it.

At the bottom is a photographic card featuring an image taken just before the attacks. I placed this card in a plastic protector so viewers can flip it over to read the details on the back. To create a poignant comparison, I included a photo I took from the Brooklyn Bridge showing the current skyline, which can be viewed by flipping over the card. This interactive element was achieved by attaching the card to the outside of the page protector using brads, adding a tactile experience for viewers. You can click on the photo to open a larger version to see this in more detail.

I also included a graphic of the Twin Towers that I found online, which I uploaded into Cricut Design Space to integrate into the layout. Next to this, you’ll see a “9/11 Never Forget” graphic sourced from Cricut Access, drawn with the pen feature of my Cricut Maker. These thoughtful design elements and interactive components aim to honor the memory of those lost while providing an engaging way for viewers to reflect on this significant moment in history.
