2023: Upward Bound Trip – Central Park – Alice in Wonderland Statue

The final spread in this Central Park series features the Alice in Wonderland statue, a whimsical bronze sculpture that has enchanted visitors of all ages since its installation in 1959. Located near the Conservatory Water, the statue was designed by artist José de Creeft and commissioned by philanthropist George Delacorte in honor of his late wife, Margarita. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s beloved tale, the sculpture depicts Alice perched on a giant mushroom, surrounded by iconic characters such as the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Cheshire Cat. Children are encouraged to climb and explore the statue, making it a favorite spot for families and a playful centerpiece in the park. With its intricate details and imaginative design, the statue beautifully captures the magic of Wonderland, offering a whimsical escape in the heart of New York City.
For this spread, I dedicated an entire page to a graphic to enhance the whimsical nature of the layout. The Alice in Wonderland graphic, along with the mushroom and teacups, were sourced from Cricut Access, and I designed the matting entirely in Cricut Design Space. The background paper, from a 1990s paper pack, adds a playful and nostalgic touch that complements the theme perfectly. Cutting and assembling the components of this spread took about two hours, so if you enjoy creating intricate designs like this, be prepared for the time investment.
This page also includes a photo of the Hans Christian Andersen statue, as I felt his whimsical nature made him a fitting addition to the theme. To complete the design, I added a ribbon stitch along the left-hand side, which adds texture and a unique finishing touch to the spread.
