2024: Terry Black’s & Twisted Root Burger Company, Waco, TX

This spread is all about good eats in Waco, Texas—two different restaurants visited on two different days, brought together under one delicious theme: food!
The left-hand page celebrates our visit to Terry Black’s Barbecue, one of Texas’ most famous barbecue names. Originally rooted in Lockhart—often called the “Barbecue Capital of Texas”—Terry Black’s brings that same slow-smoked tradition to Waco with mouthwatering brisket, ribs, and sausage. My mom’s sister and her husband came to help us unpack after our move here, and my cousin and his wife joined us for a day. We decided this called for a Texas-sized meal, so off we went to Terry Black’s. This page features a family photo and, of course, a shot of my plate piled high with smoky, tender barbecue. I chose a background paper printed with photographic typewriter keys to capture the restaurant’s industrial and rustic vibe. The layout was designed in Cricut Design Space and cut with my Cricut Maker. Fun fact—I accidentally misspelled “Barbecue” at first, but I managed to fix it (you can watch exactly how in the video below).
The right-hand page turns the spotlight on the Twisted Root Burger Company, a quirky and colorful burger joint known for its offbeat décor and bold flavors. Originally founded in Dallas, Twisted Root has made a name for itself with gourmet burgers, house-made pickles, and a personality that’s as big as Texas itself. The Waco location is a visual treat—bright murals, eclectic signage, and an industrial feel that made it the perfect match for my page’s design. I managed to fit all six photos by cropping them creatively, and I couldn’t resist adding a Cricut-cut pickle embellishment in honor of their famous pickle barrels. With flavors ranging from sweet bread-and-butter to spicy jalapeño, these pickles are as much a part of the experience as the burgers themselves. The industrial-themed cardstock ties the spread together, echoing the bold style of the building’s exterior.
