2024: Thanksgiving Break – Magnolia Table

There is something about a first visit that just hits different. For Thanksgiving 2024, I flew my son in from Florida to spend the holiday with us in Waco. It was his first time here, and because our time together was short, we decided to treat it like a highlight reel. No easing in. No slow start. We jumped straight into the good stuff.
And that first morning? We went straight to Magnolia Table.
If you scrapbook and you live anywhere near Waco, you almost have to document Magnolia at some point. It is not just breakfast. It is a moment.
This spread captures that first morning together. If you look closely at the photo of my son standing over the Waco TX lettering on the tile floor, you can see that iconic black and white pattern. I loved it so much that I searched for cardstock that mimicked that tile design and used it as the background for the entire layout. It gives the whole spread texture and a sense of place without me having to say a word.
To ground all of that pattern, I used a light gray cardstock as the matting for the photos. It softens the bold background and keeps the page from feeling too busy. Masculine layouts, especially when you are working with graphic patterns, really benefit from that kind of visual pause.
I do not usually cut my photos very much. I tend to respect the full image. But this time? I broke my own practice. We packed so much into that morning that I could not leave anything out. So I trimmed several photos down to fit more memories onto the page. You will see:
• Us outside near the historical marker
• The handprints of Chip and Jo in the sidewalk
• Interior shots of the restaurant
• And of course the food
Because what is Magnolia without the food?
I love that this spread feels full. Slightly crowded. Almost bursting.
Which is honestly exactly how that visit felt.
When you only have a few days with your adult child, you do not waste time. You take the pictures. You eat the deviled eggs. You stand on the tile that says Waco TX and you smile because he is here.
This page is not just about a restaurant.
It is about first visits.
It is about squeezing joy into tight timelines.
It is about a father who wanted his son to see his world.
And if you have ever had one of those visits where you tried to fit an entire city into a long weekend, you know exactly what I mean.
