Europe Vacation: Ephemera Page

Europe Vacation: Ephemera Page

Europe Vacation: Ephemera Page

I wanted to show you my final page in my two volume Europe Vacation Scrapbook.  The left hand page shows my plane tickets and my internet card which was necessary before the proliferation of wireless internet and internet in hotels in Europe.  What I wanted to highlight is the right hand page which is a pocket page for holding ephemera.  If you look carefully you will notice a CD in a plastic envelope in the top right corner.  It is my habit to keep a disc of the pictures with the album so that if I ever need to reprint some, or see all of the pictures from the trip, that it is available with the scrapbook.  For safety, I always have a backup on my computer as well.

Europe Vacation: Corfu – Dinner and Entertainment

Europe Vacation: Corfu - Dinner and Entertainment

Europe Vacation: Corfu – Dinner and Entertainment

Our last night in Corfu we went out for dinner and entertainment.  Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the restaurant, but they had some amazing dancers who broke plates and danced with fire.

These pages are an example of using the paper to drive the design of the pages.  I really liked the left hand page background paper for its Greek theme and wanted to use it – so I drew the color inspiration for the pages from it.  You will noticed that the borders of the pictures on the right hand page are similar in color to the left hand background paper.  I also then used the same color for the borders of the pictures on the left hand page as the background page on the right side.  Using this technique ties the two pages together.

You will also notice that I used a corner cutter to cut both the photographs and their borders which adds elegance to the pages.

Europe Vacation: Corfu, Greek Islands – Beach Day

Europe Vacation: Corfu, Greek Islands - Beach Day

Europe Vacation: Corfu, Greek Islands – Beach Day

We had a two night stay in Corfu to give us a chance to rest from two weeks of being on the road. During the full day we had there we had opportunity to participate in some water sports. I had never been para sailing before and took the opportunity to do so in this amazing location. My advise when para sailing is – make sure the harness is on right – mine wasn’t quite in the correct position and it made for an uncomfortable ride. I also thought that para sailing would be a rush – but it really wasn’t – it was more of a peaceful floating in the sky and I got a wonderful sense of what it must feel like to be a bird. Before I started they told me that I would start on land and that they would pull me into the boat when it was over – I was glad that did because when I was up above the cove I could see fish (sharks?) that were bigger than the boat in the water and I had no desire to be in the water with them!

Some of my fellow tourists decided they were going to water tube and I was able to get some actions shows of them taking off down the starting ramp. You will notice that I started the pictures on the left hand page and higher and then mimicked their route by placing the to the right and lower each time – it gives the pages a sense of the motion that they were experiencing. I used a corner cutter to round the edges of most of the pictures to mimic the round water tubes.

Europe Vacation: Corfu, Greek Islands

Europe Vacation: Corfu, Greek Islands

This is another page that isn’t particularly outstanding but I wanted to share a unique use of ephemera with you.  This page shares our arrival in Corfu in the Greek Islands, and a day spent by the pool relaxing.  The map of Corfu on the left hand page is actually a place mat from the hotel that we were staying at.  If you look carefully on the right of the map you will see some stains left over from my breakfast that morning!  I have since learned that if the place mat is worth saving for ephemera that I should take it off the table before I eat.  I have also found that if you ask the waiter for a new one at the end of the meal as a “souvenir” that they often will bring you nice clean new ones.

Europe Trip: Greek Island Cruise departing from Brindisi, Italy

Europe Trip: Greek Island Cruise

Europe Trip: Greek Island Cruise

After visiting Pompeii we boarded an overnight Ferry in Brindisi, Italy which took us to Corfu, in the Greek Islands.  This page doesn’t really stand out, but I did use a technique that was new to me.  You will notice the cruise ship on the left hand page and it looks like it is riding on the ocean’s horizon on the background paper.  The way that I created this was to take one page of clouds and one page of waves and cut each in half.  Then the two halves were pasted next to each other to create the effect of the horizon.  You will have to excuse the crazy “Titanic” pose on the right hand page – I don’t know what we were thinking but we were having fun.
