Honoring Sacrifice: Scrapbooking the Korean War Memorial

The next stop on our tour was the Korean War Veterans Memorial, a deeply moving tribute that features hauntingly lifelike soldier statues and a striking marble wall etched with photographs from the war. One of the most powerful elements of the memorial is the phrase “Freedom is not Free,” but unfortunately, my photo of it didn’t turn out.

Unexpectedly, my son provided the perfect solution. He had picked up some pieces of bark near the memorial and insisted I save them for the scrapbook. Initially, I hadn’t planned to use them, but when I realized my photo was unusable, I decided to handwrite the phrase onto the bark pieces. To mount them securely, I used thick sticky tabs to give them dimension and prevent cracking.

On the left-hand page, I experimented with a pinwheel photo arrangement, a new design I plan to incorporate into future layouts. For this spread, I kept the embellishments minimal, allowing the solemnity of the memorial to speak for itself. Sometimes, the most meaningful scrapbook pages come together in unexpected ways, making this one even more special.

  1. We just returned home last week from a trip to DC and we also went to the Korean war memorial it was great. I also went back at night and it looks very spooky with the lights on it.
