2023: Upward Bound Trip – Brooklyn Bridge

We ended our adventures by walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, an iconic symbol of New York City and a stunning feat of engineering that connects Manhattan and Brooklyn across the East River. Completed in 1883, it was the first suspension bridge to use steel cables and held the title of the world’s longest suspension bridge at the time of its opening. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed under the supervision of his son Washington Roebling, the bridge stands as a testament to innovation and resilience. Its Gothic-style towers, with their soaring arches, create a dramatic silhouette against the city skyline. The pedestrian walkway, elevated above the vehicular lanes, offers breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, and the East River, making it a favorite destination for both locals and tourists. The Brooklyn Bridge remains a timeless symbol of New York’s architectural ambition and enduring spirit.
Inspired by the success of using a thematic photographic background for the Statue of Liberty spread, I chose to use a similar approach for this spread dedicated to the Brooklyn Bridge. The background paper, part of a New York-themed paper pack, beautifully complements the design. I selected an orange theme for the right-hand page to echo the sunset reflected on the left-hand page and to coordinate with the shirt I’m wearing in the selfie featured on that page. Using Cricut Design Space, I created the image drawn on the left-hand page with my Cricut Maker and its pen feature. You may notice the “1.1 miles” and arrows underneath—a playful nod to our tour guide’s claim that the bridge is only a quarter-mile long. While that’s true for the span of the bridge itself, from entrance to exit, it’s actually 1.1 miles—a much longer walk than anticipated, and I’m sure he knew that.
The right-hand page features a pen-drawn logo of the bridge in the middle of the photos, tying the design together. While this layout is fairly simple, it effectively captures the different aspects of the experience of walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. If you’re visiting New York, I highly recommend taking the time to walk across this historic landmark—it’s an unforgettable experience.
