2023: Washington D.C. – Embassy Row

The final spread in my Washington, D.C., trip album is dedicated to Embassy Row, and for this layout, I experimented with some new tools and techniques to create a design that reflects the rich diversity of this historic area.
Embassy Row, a fascinating stretch of Massachusetts Avenue, is home to one of the most diverse collections of diplomatic missions in the world. Grand historic mansions, each flying the flag of its respective nation, line the avenue, making it a hub of international diplomacy and cultural exchange. Many of these buildings date back to the Gilded Age, adding architectural elegance to the neighborhood. As you walk along, embassies from across the globe offer glimpses into different cultures, histories, and governance styles. The area comes to life during special events like Passport DC, where embassies open their doors to the public, inviting visitors to experience their music, art, and cuisine firsthand. Whether you’re drawn to history, architecture, or global affairs, Embassy Row is a must-visit and an essential part of understanding D.C.’s role as a diplomatic center.
For this scrapbook spread, I used Mosaic Moments metal die cuts and Mosaic Moments paper to create a structured, grid-based design that allows me to showcase multiple photos in a cohesive way. The 12×12 paper is pre-marked for a 10×10 grid, breaking the space into one-inch squares, which made it ideal for fitting in numerous images while maintaining balance. I used various dies and my new die-cutting machine, the Gemini II, to achieve the intricate details in the layout. This technique allowed me to fit many photos into a single spread while still keeping it visually engaging.
The right-hand page is centered around the Republic of South Africa embassy, a meaningful highlight for me as it represents the country where I grew up. I also included signage from several other African and Middle Eastern embassies to capture the global essence of the area. The left-hand page features images of the Saudi Arabian and British embassies, along with statues of Winston Churchill and Mahatma Gandhi, both of whom played significant roles in international history. I also included a photo of the Cosmos Club, which I had highlighted in an earlier spread. To complete the layout, I used leftover squares from my smaller cut images to fill in gaps and create a seamless, mosaic-style effect.
I absolutely loved working on this spread—it was an opportunity to try a new creative technique while capturing the unique diplomatic and cultural landscape of Embassy Row.
