2023: Upward Bound Trip – Central Park – Angel of the Waters
As we continued our journey through Central Park, we came upon the Angel of the Waters, a stunning bronze statue that graces the top of the Bethesda Fountain and stands as one of the park’s most iconic features. Designed by sculptor Emma Stebbins in 1868 and dedicated with the Bethesda Fountain in 1873, it holds the distinction of being the first major public artwork in New York City created by a woman. The statue depicts an angel blessing the water below, symbolizing purity and healing—a tribute to the Croton Aqueduct system that brought fresh water to New York City in the mid-19th century. Surrounding the angel are four cherubs representing health, purity, temperance, and peace. Located at the heart of the park, the Angel of the Waters and Bethesda Terrace serve as a gathering place for visitors, offering a serene and picturesque setting that captures the timeless beauty of Central Park.
For this spread, I used a beautiful background cardstock with the image of the lake in Central Park that I had from a New York-themed paper pack. Initially, I wasn’t sure how to incorporate it, but as I worked on the Angel of the Waters spread, I realized I could use a graphic of the statue instead of photographs on to this page. I found a detailed photo of the statue online, uploaded it to Cricut Design Space, and created a three-layer image, which I then cut out with my Cricut Maker and carefully assembled. The entire process took about two hours, but I’m very pleased with how it turned out.
For the right-hand page, I continued the color scheme inspired by the photo, using fall leaf background paper and a light yellow border. The title was created using the pen feature of my Cricut Maker. Although we visited in early summer, I decided to use a fall theme to complement the striking picture on the left-hand side, giving the spread a warm and cohesive design.
