2024 Thanksgiving Break: Terry Black’s Barbecue and Twisted Root Burger Company
Continuing with my Thanksgiving 2024 scrapbook spreads, this time I am focusing on two of the restaurants my son and I enjoyed while he was visiting me in Waco. We certainly spent plenty of time exploring Magnolia and some of the other local attractions, but we also made time to enjoy some really good food!
The two restaurants featured in this double-page spread are Terry Black’s Barbecue and Twisted Root Burger Company. Both have become favorites of mine since moving to Waco, and I was excited to introduce my son to them.
You might notice that my son is wearing different shirts in the photographs from Terry Black’s. That is because we actually went there twice! He enjoyed the barbecue so much that he decided to go back before flying home to Florida so he could take some with him for his friends. Yes, he actually packed up Texas barbecue and took it on the plane!
Choosing the Colors and Background
For this spread, I decided to use a black and red color scheme inspired by a Terry Black’s Barbecue sticker that I had saved. I always enjoy using the colors of a restaurant, attraction, or event as inspiration for my scrapbook pages, and this sticker provided a natural starting point.
I also chose a background paper that has a rustic, industrial appearance. Both restaurants have that kind of atmosphere, so I thought the paper would help connect the two experiences visually, even though they are different restaurants.
I wanted to keep this layout relatively simple. The photographs, restaurant logos, and a few embellishments tell the story without needing a lot of additional decoration.
The Twisted Root Burger Company Page
The right-hand page features our visit to Twisted Root Burger Company, which has some really incredible burgers, fries, and onion rings. One of my favorites is their Million Dollar Burger. It is a little expensive, although thankfully not actually a million dollars! If I know I am going there, I sometimes skip breakfast just to make sure I have enough room to enjoy it.
My son loves pickles, so I knew he would particularly enjoy the pickle jars at Twisted Root. Naturally, I wanted to incorporate that into the scrapbook design. I used Cricut Design Space to create a pickle embellishment and cut it out using my Cricut Maker. It was a fun way to add something that connected directly to his experience at the restaurant.
I also found the Twisted Root Burger Company logo online and incorporated it into the layout. Originally, I tried cutting the logo with my Cricut, but some of the lines were simply too thin to cut successfully. Instead, I switched to the Draw feature and used a 1.0 marker to recreate the logo.
This is one of the things I really appreciate about working with the Cricut. When one approach doesn’t work, there is often another way to accomplish the same thing. Sometimes drawing a design is a much better option than trying to cut all those tiny details out of cardstock.
I did have to make a small adjustment to the gray photo mat because the original placement didn’t quite work with the finished design. You may be able to see where I trimmed it a little, but I am still happy with how it turned out.
The Terry Black’s Barbecue Page
The other page features our visits to Terry Black’s Barbecue. If you enjoy Texas barbecue, this is definitely a restaurant worth visiting. The food is excellent, and apparently my son agreed since he wanted to take some back to Florida!
One of the things I particularly enjoyed about this page was incorporating the actual Terry Black’s sticker that inspired the color scheme. You can see the same sticker in one of the photographs, so it was fun to include the real thing on the page as well.
The sticker also helped solve a little design problem. There was a car in the background of one of my photographs that I really didn’t like. Rather than trying to crop the photograph and lose part of the image, I decided to position the Terry Black’s sticker over the car. It worked pretty well! The sticker may have ended up a little crooked, but it covered the distraction and added another connection to the restaurant.
I am always a little nervous when placing larger stickers directly onto a scrapbook page. Unlike some other embellishments, you often only get one chance to position them correctly. I usually try to start at one edge and slowly work my way across, but sometimes the sticker has other ideas!
I hope you enjoy watching the video as I put this spread together. As always, I would love to see your projects and hear how you incorporate restaurant memorabilia and logos into your own scrapbook layouts.
