Aruba Vacation 2009: Currency – The Aruban Florin

Aruba Vacation 2009: Currency

Aruba Vacation 2009: Currency

Ephemera Tip: I think that one of the best things to collect as ephemera on a trip is foreign currency: Each country I go to I try and collect two of each of the coins and some paper money – usually the lowest denominations.  Currency is wonderful to collect because it is art, history and a souvenir all built into one!  I usually find a bank and ask for specific change and ask for crisp notes.  I tell them I am using them for a collection and the tellers have always been happy to oblige.

If you look carefully at this page you can see that I have placed the Florin current and coins into plastic pockets so that I don’t have to glue the notes and coins down.  The plastic pockets come with adhesive on the back so that they will stick to your pages without glue or stickers showing.    The left hand page, with the paper currency, actually is from a currency collector album that is three ring punched.  I used the star fish brads to cover the three holes and hold the page in place.  The fish brad on the right hand side of the notes holds the plastic folder in place.  I can pull this page out and then flip the plastic pockets to be able to see the other side of the notes.

Aruba Vacation 2009: Historical Museum and President’s Car

Aruba Vacation 2009: Historical Museum and President's Car

Aruba Vacation 2009: Historical Museum and President’s Car

This spread showcases a day that we spent in the Capital of Aruba – Oranjestad.  We visited the original fort and walked by the Parliamentary building.  As we were walking by the Parliamentary building we noticed a car parked with the license plate “1” so we took a picture of it.  It was later confirmed to us that this was the President of Aruba’s car!  Not something that you get to see or do in the United States!

The Aruban flag I purchased at a tourist shop in Oranjestad.  When we travel to other countries I always try to purchase a flag like this as it serves as some great ephemera.

On the top of the left hand page I used a piece of sewing border ribbon to add interest to the page.  I glued this down with crafting glue.  Be careful that you use a small amount of glue if you do this so that the page doesn’t get too wet and warp.

Ephemera Tip: Get two brochures – when you visit landmarks and historical locationsYou will notice on the bottom left that I have a brochure of the Historical Museum of Aruba.  It was a double sided brochure so in order to see both sides of it I had to use two brochures.

Aruba Vacation 2009: Snorkeling at De Palm Island

Aruba Vacation 2009: Snorkeling at De Palm Island

Aruba Vacation 2009: Snorkeling at De Palm Island

De Palm Island is Aruba’s private island water park and beach.  We were able to visit De Palm Island as part of our Jeep Tour which was an incredible all day adventure.  We were supposed to SNUBA at De Palm Island but it was too windy and there were too many waves for us to go out and do this.  Snuba-ing is like scuba diving except that you are tethered to a boat that holds your oxygen.  Click on the links to find out more.  We did get some snorkeling in – but the waves were kicking up sand, and as you can see from the pictures, visibility wasn’t all that great.

Aruba Vacation Tip:  Spend some time at De Palm Island – there is a small water park for kids, opportunities to snorkel, SNUBA, and to just relax on the beach Buy your Tour Package to De Palm Island.

I used my Cricut machine to cut out the Titles on this page and spread them over the two pages to help tie them together.

Vacation Tip: If you are spending a day near water invest in several cheap waterproof camerasthat way you can get great underwater pictures like the ones on this spread, and you don’t have to worry about your expensive camera being stolen from your stuff on the beach while you are in the water.

Aruba Vacation 2009: Abandoned Gold Mines and Drunken Lizards

Aruba Vacation: Abandoned Gold Mines and Drunken Lizards

Aruba Vacation 2009: Abandoned Gold Mines and Drunken Lizards

This was a stop on our Jeep Tour – an abandoned Gold Mine and Foundry.  We spent quite a bit of time here and had some adventures.  My son found a beer bottle that still had some beer in it and a lizard that was inside.  The lizard was not eager to come out of the bottle and we took some hilarious video tape of the experience.  We sent the video in to America’s Funniest Home Videos, but haven’t heard from them yet 😦  – so maybe we were the only ones that found it funny.

I wanted to showcase the placement of the photographs on the left hand page as this placement gives life and movement to the page.  Notice on the right hand page the inclusion of the green lizard cutout.  While I don’t journal about the drunken lizard on this page – it reminds my son and I of the story.

Aruba Vacation 2009: The Coast

Aruba Vacation 2008: Coastal Scenes

Aruba Vacation 2008: Coastal Scenes

I want to highlight the placement of pictures in this spread – notice that I had one picture that doesn’t fit with the others.  Don’t let this worry you if you have this situation – placing one picture like this can bring interest to a page that might otherwise look plain if all the pictures are oriented in the same direction.

A tradition in Aruba is to pile rocks on top of each other to form rock towers as you can see in the pictures on the right.  I was also pleasantly surprised to find a fossil in the rocks – the bottom right hand photograph.

Don’t be afraid to put unusual items in your scrapbook – the ephemera at the bottom of the left hand page is a bracelet that we bought at the tourist shop near the Natural Bridge rock featured on the left hand page.

Aruba Vacation 2009: California Lighthouse

Aruba Vacation 2009: California Lighthouse

Aruba Vacation 2009: California Lighthouse

This spread is the first example of using photographs from different excursions to highlight one location.  You can see pictures from the ground – taken during the Jeep Tour, and the air – taken during the Helicopter Tour.

My favorite design element from this page is the “light” emanating from the lighthouse on he bottom left that spreads out to the page on the right.   This “light” helps to tie the two pages into one visual element.

Aruba Vacation 2009: From the Air

Aruba Vacation 2009: Helicopter Ride

Aruba Vacation 2009: Helicopter Ride

This spread highlights some of the pictures taken from the helicopter ride.  If you look closely at the “Aruba” cutout in the top left hand corner you will see that I used a black marker to outline the cutout.  This technique can help an element on your page to stand out if it seems to be fading into the background.

Also look at the placement of the four photographs on the left hand page.  Notice that only one corner of each photograph has been rounded – this helps to bring the four photographs into one cohesive unit.

I also added a ship sticker to the right hand page to bring interest and dimension to that page.

Aruba Vacation 2009: Dining

Aruba Vacation 2009: Restaurants

Aruba Vacation 2009: Restaurants

This spread showcases photographs from all of the wonderful meals that we had at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Hotel in Aruba.  We had an all inclusive package that included all the food that we wanted.

I included pictures of the restaurant names, plates of food, and pictures of us enjoying the food :).  One of the evenings I took a picture of the bill – which we didn’t have to pay since it was all inclusive!  This was to remind me of the value of making reservations for the fancy restaurants versus eating in the casual buffet dining areas.

EK Success Paper Shapers Corner Adorner Card Creators Punch - Trumpet Flower 7/8I tied all of the pictures together by matching the colors of the plates from one of the restaurants. I used the same background color borders that I cut with the corner cutter seen to the right, for all of the square pictures.  You will notice that the corner cuts are in mirror image of each other.  I accomplished this by turning the frames over to cut them from the backside for the mirror imaged corners.

To cut the photographs of the plates I used a pair of sharp pointed scissors so that I could cut them precisely.

Vacation Tip – For Dining at All Inclusive resorts:

  1. Many hotels have fancy (and expensive) restaurants that you can enjoy – but you must make reservations – sometimes they only allow this starting the morning of.  So, find out early how to make reservations and then make them as soon as you are allowed.
  2. Dine early – we were able to enjoy all of the fancy restaurants because we chose to eat dinner as soon as the restaurant opened.  This also allowed us to attend nighttime activities without a rush and a full stomach.

Aruba Vacation 2009: Sunsets

Aruba Vacation 2009: Sunsets

Aruba Vacation 2009: Sunsets

Every night that we were in Aruba we experienced amazing sunsets.  I combined several from different nights on this page.  The design elements on this page are not particularly spectacular, but I wanted to show something unique that I did.  On the right hand page you will notice a tall ship on the horizon on the page.  I did this to match the pictures of tall ships in the sunset.  In order to make it look right I cut off the bottom of the tall ship sticker so that it looked like it was riding low in the water.

Click here if you want to book a sunset tall ship cruise in Aruba.  We didn’t do this because I get seasick – but we heard many wonderful things about the experience.

Aruba Vacation 2009: Beach Time

Aruba Vacation 2009: Beach Time

The pictures on this page were taken on several different days and combined together to make a Beach Day theme.  While there is lots of sand on this page on the embellishments unfortunately I forgot to pick up a little sand from the actual beach to put in the scrapbook :(.

EK Success Paper Shapers Corner Adorner Card Creators Punch - Trumpet Flower 7/8The left and right borders on this page are actually made out of material and are a little thicker which adds some dimension to the page.  I also enjoyed having one page be sand and the other water to represent the beach and ocean.  I also framed each of the photographs with the same background paper to tie the two pages together.  I also used the same corner cutter on all of the frames.  If you click on the image to the right you can buy one for yourself.

Vacation Tip: If you are spending a day near water invest in several cheap waterproof camerasthat way you can get great underwater pictures like the one on the bottom right, and you don’t have to worry about your expensive camera being stolen from your stuff on the beach while you are in the water.
